Popular Reasons People are Moving to Idaho
Idaho is no secret anymore! For awhile, people were moving to Idaho, and the greater Boise area for more affordable home prices. This put major pressure on demand and drove our prices up. Our population growth is still happening at a rapid rate, it's just driven more by lifestyle-related choices and reasons beyond home prices.
In no particular order, here’s a list of the most common reasons we see for our clients moving into this area:
1. More Space + Slower Pace of Life
A lot of people feel burned out by dense metro living, traffic, and constant hustle. Idaho still offers:
- shorter commutes
- less congestion
- more yard space
- access to nature
- quieter neighborhoods
There's a big overall draw on the “room to breathe” feeling.
2. Outdoor Lifestyle
People move to Idaho because they want:
- hiking
- skiing
- mountain biking
- fishing
- boating
- camping
- rivers and lakes nearby
A lot of buyers want everyday life to feel more connected to the outdoors instead of being trapped indoors or commuting constantly.
3. Overall Quality of Life
People consistently describe Idaho as:
- calmer
- cleaner
- safer
- more family-oriented
- community-focused
The idea of kids riding bikes outside, backyard barbecues, and knowing neighbors still resonates strongly with relocators.
4. Remote Work Changed Everything
Once people realized they could work remotely, many no longer needed to stay in more expensive cities.
So people from places like California, Washington, Oregon and Alaska started choosing Idaho because they could keep similar income while gaining more lifestyle and space.
5. Relative Affordability
Idaho is not “cheap” anymore, especially compared to local wages.
But compared to many West Coast markets, buyers still feel they get:
- more house
- more land
- lower taxes
- lower congestion
- lower overall stress
for the money.
6. Safety + Community Feel
Many relocators mention wanting:
- safer neighborhoods
- less crime
- stronger community values
- better environment for raising kids
Idaho’s reputation for friendliness and community still plays a major role.
Overall people are moving to Idaho because they believe life here feels more manageable and more meaningful. The quality they want for themselves or their families across all areas of life feels more accessible here. We noticed this for people in any stage and age of life too. They're seeking enjoyment and an increased quality that they haven't been able to access or afford elsewhere.
What reasons did we miss for why people move here? We'd love to hear from you about what brought you here, or what has you considering moving here!
